Cabbage Rolls

Straight forward traditional Polish Cabbage Rolls recipe.

  • 1 head of green cabbage

Filling

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 garlic clove minced
  • 2 tbsp dried or fresh chopped parsley
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper

Sauce

  • 1 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes
  • 1 10.75 oz can of tomato soup
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 garlic clove minced
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  1. Preheat oven to 350 deg F.
  2. Cut core out of cabbage and boil for 5 - 10 minutes.
  3. To make the sauce, sautee onion and garlic in butter. Add rest of sauce ingredients and cook ~ 20 minutes.
  4. To make the filling, add all ingredients to a bowl and mix until well combined.
  5. Place 1-2 cups of the sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish.
  6. Trim thick stem of cabbage leaf by shaving it down or removing with a v-cut.
  7. Take about 1/4 cup of filling and place into center of cabbage leaf.
  8. Roll it up like a burrito.
  9. Place the rolls into the baking dish.
  10. Pour remaining sauce over cabbage rolls.
  11. Cover with foil and bake in oven for 1 1/2 hours.
